With my house on the market, viewing ready, I’ve been eating out more to keep my kitchen clean (ya, that’s the reason). I’ve had the opportunity to explore some of the new places that have been popping up in Hamilton and some that I have always wanted to try. Hamilton has come a long way with some of the shabbier neighbourhoods now considered the place to be to eat out. I’m no food critic but I thought I would share a few that I have tried:
The Aberdeen Tavern:
Atmosphere: warm and inviting
Service: Very attentive and friendly
Very nice ambience for dinner. The menu has enough selection to keep most happy. I had the braised beef and it was tender and flavorful. The cocktails were a little underwhelming but overall I was please with my meal and will definitley return to try more of the menu.
Atmosphere: Small, but won’t leave you feeling crowded.
Service: Friendly but busy so they won’t overwhelm you with check-ins to see how you are doing
Vegans don’t even think about it. This is the place to get your beef on. They have what they call the Weekly Chef Smash – a special burger of the week that is always loadded with food for the Gods. All the burgers are fresh and grilled to perfection. The GarPar fries are addictive. If you’re in the mood for a bevvy, try the In a Pickle Caesar (it is accompanied by a deep fried pickle!)
Mattson & Co.:
Atmosphere: Relaxed Formality
I went on a Friday night for the live Jazz dinner show and it did not disappoint. The food was tastey and so was the jazz. The menu has vegan and gluten free options but if you are a carnivore, try the beef short ribs.
Atmosphere: Rustic, fun comic art with an open kitchen.
Service: Friendly and attentive
This is a great place to stop in for fun beverages and a few apps. The Crispy Calamari with pickled chili and sweet & sour sauce had just the right amount of tang. The smoked caesar salad was delicious. The Sushi Nachos were also a big hit at the table. For drinks, I liked the Sincerely Yours.
Atmosphere: Cheap and cheerful
This was an amazing breakfast experience. I had the Uptown Crab cake benny and they did not disappoint – the crab cakes were more crab than filler and the portion was healthy (read large). I “enhanced” my potatos with friend onions, red peppers and chorizo and immediately did not regret that decision.
